Travelling by buses or coaches is often, with good reasons, considered as the safest means of road transportation. International statistics is also backing up this opinion. One factor in connection with this is of course the weight and the size of passenger transport vehicles. The other side of this equation is consequently the weight of other vehicles involved in collisions with buses or coaches. Here we have a situation where occupants of passenger cars and riders of two wheelers suffer due to the difference in the kinetic energy, depending on which vehicle they have travelled in. An improved collision compatibility between different size vehicles colliding with each other will reduce the risk of injuries and fatalities. The ECE Regulation 93 (Front under-run protection device for commercial vehicles, category N2 and N3) is addressing this matter. This paper is describing how Volvo Bus Corporation took on the challenge to improve the collision compatibility on its long distance coaches.
