Whereas for covering the ever-growing demand for electrical energy alternatives to fossil fuels - be they from renewable sources like solar, wind- or waterpower, or be they controversially discussed like nuclear power - are already widespreadly employed the transportation sector is still almost exclusively relying on fossil fuels derived from crude oil. Thus it is rightly considered to be one of the major emitters of CO2, which by many authorities is considered to mainly be responsible for the anthropogenic greenhouse effect.
