Abstract

A wide experimental investigation was performed on an automotive Direct Injection (DI) Diesel engine fitted with a Common Rail Fuel Injection System (FIS), a variable nozzle turbine turbocharger and a cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, in order to optimise turbocharger control taking account of FIS and EGR management. Different control objectives and variables were selected for each considered engine condition, ranging in the whole operating field. The main experimental results are presented and discussed in the paper, focusing on the influence of control strategies both on target parameters (fuel consumption, pollutants and smoke emissions, etc.) and on other engine operating quantities.
