Abstract

Abstract

Reports in international media on accidents with buses do often not correlate with statistic data on safety of passenger transports in general. In evaluations coaches can be found usually as one of the safest way for transportation. The presentation will give some figures on this issue. Related to the high market share of Dekra Automobil GmbH in Germany, we have a huge number of buses tested every year. The presentation will give a brief overview on our experience with testing buses according to 96/96/EC Regulation in combination with German additional requirements for periodic inspection. On the other hand it seems reasonable to think about an updated procedure for testing modern vehicles like buses if we realize the electronic controlled devices on new buses; ABS, EBS, Speed limiter, ESP and the upcoming new Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) like Lane Keeping Assistance, Drowsiness Monitoring or Emergency Brake systems. New technology is also useful to be applied at the periodical technical inspection. Dekra Automobil GmbH is capable to deal with vehicle specific data, covering information for PTI of a single vehicle. The so called System Data, based on VIN specific definition of vehicle fitment with systems like mentioned above, enables the periodical test to be carried out in an appropriate way to evaluate the status of the vehicle in comparison to the time it was built. The development of On Board and Off Board Diagnostic functions will be also an important option for improvement of the existing test procedures (not only) for buses.
