Abstract

Computations of the flow around a simplified bus were performed. The computations of the high Reynolds number flow were carried out with Fluent 6.1 Finite Volume software using six different types of Reynolds averaged turbulence models. The results of each computation were compared with a Large Eddy Simulation of Siniša Krajnović and Lars Davidson (Journal of Fluids Engineering, May 2003, Vol. 125, 500-509). The result with the best agreement to the reference case was selected and analyzed. The most important flow features around a bus were highlighted using wall streamlines, critical point concept, stream surface visualization, velocity and pressure contour plots. In the investigation attention was placed on phenomena related to economy, safety, operation, esthetics and ergonomics of buses.
