ABSTRACT

Since the first implementation of intelligence into commercial vehicles with ABS in the early 1980s the brake system over the years has evolved from a system just stopping a vehicle to a system which actively controls the total vehicle behaviour and vehicle safety. Today availability of new sensor technology allows to upgrade this status for full vehicle stability control including lateral dynamics. Systems like tractor based Electronic Stability Control ESC and Roll Stability Control RSC or trailer based Roll Stability Control RSS help to avoid accidents of commercial vehicles which typically involve high potential of severe damage when jackknifing or rolling over. Development approaches beyond the concept of stand-alone system architecture mark further safety potential. This is exemplified by realization of Adaptive Cruise Control ACC which stands for a new concept of integrated longitudinal vehicle driving control.
