Abstract

In Germany, safety belts have been mandatory even in trucks since 1992, but only few occupants are belted. Restraint systems in trucks have a benefit as shown by accident analysis. There ejected truck occupants face the greatest probability of being killed in an accident. One scenario with the impact of a truck on the rear end of a trailer was simulated in a crash test. The article contains some statistics and presents results of the crash test (belted driver dummy and not-belted codriver dummy). A public campaign to increase the belt-use rates for truck occupants is proposed.
