Abstract

The new technological advancements and increasing propagation of mobile devices pose great opportunities for engineers and traffic accidents experts. These gadgets are compact hybrid devices integrating the capabilities of personal digital assistant (PDA), mobile phone, camera, music player, FM radio, Global Positioning System (GPS) and so on. They have standard computing facilities and advanced communication features including wireless and Bluetooth. This paper concentrates on the development of real - time tyre-road friction coefficient estimation systems using both accelerometer and GPS signals from a mobile device (smartphone), in some particular condition. Preliminary results are presented from experimental data obtained from on road experiments. The first experimental results show that the system can performs reliably and quickly in estimating friction coefficient on road surfaces during particular vehicle maneuvers. The system can be utilized on front/rear-wheel drive as well as all- wheel drive vehicles.
