Abstract

The principal sources of noise in engines are intake noise, radiator noise, combustion noise and exhaust noise. Mufflers are widely used for exhaust noise attenuation in vehicles and machinery all over the world. The present work describes the use of computer simulation to the design of an exhaust system used in automotive industry. The exhaust system consists of the exhaust manifold, the header, the catalytic converter, the muffler, and the tailpipe. Internal flow numerical analysis for the muffler is carried out with computational fluid dynamics software. Certain flow characteristics must be met for the optimal performance of the exhaust system analysed. Velocity field, pressure field, density field and temperature field are obtained to analyse the airflow influences on muffler performances.
