ABSTRACT

Increasingly stringent automobile emission standards mandate development of engines operating in the “lean burn” regime. To fulfill this requirement and optimize engine performance, feedback control systems employing sensors that monitor the level of oxygen in exhaust gases will be needed. Because of their nonlinear response and high operating temperatures, current-generation potentiometric oxygen sensors are not adequate. Amperometric oxygen sensors are used. In this paper we analyze the electrochemical processes of amperometric sensors. These are in function of sensors construction, oxygen concentration in exhaust gases and temperature.
