ABSTRACT

Dimethyl ether (DME) is identified as a clean alternative fuel for diesel engines. DME can provide very low emissions and totally smokeless diesel engine operation. DME has no carbon-carbon bonds and has excellent auto ignition characteristics. An investigation of a DME fueled DI diesel engine has been carried out in order to highlight engine operation possibilities similar to those of classic diesel cycle, using the double injection method (the ignition of DME is assured by diesel fuel injection pilot). The paper presents some modeling results of the processes inside the cylinder of diesel engine fueled shown with DME and also some experimental results. The obtained experimental results have shown a decrease of the NOx and soot emissions’ levels.
