Abstract

This paper describes the methods used and the results obtained in the development of an exhaust system for a 4 cylinder high performance gasoline engine.

The target was to reduce emissions to match the Euro 4 standards and to improve engine performance versus Euro 3 configuration without increasing the sound level.

The Euro 3 exhaust system, used as a starting point, was analysed and the necessary improvements were identified. Then computer simulations were employed, first only mono-dimensional for preliminary assessment of the new design and then coupled mono-three dimensional calculations to optimise the fluid dynamics and the flow on the catalytic monolith in a simulation environment similar to real engine conditions.

The resulting Euro 4 exhaust system has confirmed the expected reduced emission levels on the vehicle as well as the performance improvement on the test bench.
