Abstract

The present paper outlines some important aspects of the current and future Lamborghini’s approach to develop high performance naturally aspirated engines. Focusing on a V12 engine, first we discuss the optimisation of the charge efficiency in the whole engine operating conditions, obtainable by an accurately designed variable geometry intake system coupled with a variable valve timing system. Then the issue of the electronic engine management is considered, highlighting how it is important for a high performance engine manufacturer to have a direct control of the engine management systems and relevant software algorithms. Also the “in-vehicle” integration must be considered as a main target; the example of the engine cooling here presented shows how it is addressed considering also “unconventional” approaches, such as the “variable” geometry system developed by Lamborghini for its new “Murcielago”. Emphasis is then put on the exhaust emissions, OBD and noise control, which have to be taken into account since the early stage of the engine development: these issues, together with the performance issue, have to be part of the same development program.
