Abstract

Actual internal combustion engine are cooled down thanks to an old and non flexible architecture of cooling circuit, including mechanical belt-driven pump, mechanical or On/Off electrical fan, and thermostat[1]. Traditional cooling system works well but has no closed loop control, energy balance criteria, awareness of vehicle/engine operating conditions, communication with others control systems on the vehicle.

The vehicle usage is highly made of small trips [2] when the components are not running at nominal temperature. In such conditions, both the engine and the catalyst work very inefficiently leading in both fuel and polluting emissions increase [3][4]. Specific works on engine hydrocarbons underline 60% are emitted during cold start up due to low catalyst efficiency [5].
