Abstract:

We proposed a novel segment type SRM in which the segment core is embedded in aluminum rotor block, in order to increase the mechanical strength and easy manufacturing as well as to improve the torque performance characteristics and reduce the vibration and acoustic noise. In addition, it is confirmed that a segment type SRM have advantage in the torque performance in comparison with a conventional VR type SRM. This paper proposes an outer rotor type novel segment SRM for in-wheel motor that the rotor is placed outside. This motor has high torque/volume ratio because of larger turning radius compared with an inner rotor type segment SRM. And the stator coil end is small because the diameter of the stator becomes small, so that the outer rotor type novel segment SRM is able to decrease the copper loss. In this paper, we explain the operation principle of the outer rotor type novel segment SRM and the design parameters are roughly optimized for average torque using finite element method. The remarkable improvement of machine performance in the outer rotor type segment SRM over the inner rotor type segment SRM is confirmed.
