Construction of an HEV Simulation Program for Performance Testing

Abstract

HEV(Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is one of the most promising candidates for future transportation because of its outstanding fuel economy. Before prototyping a realistic HEV, a reliable simulation program is required to test the capacities of the power sources and optimize the parameters of HEV. This process can reduce the expenses during the designing of an HEV system. Also improvement of the system is possible with reduced number of experiments. In this paper, we present an HEV simulation program implemented on Matlab/Simdriveline toolbox, which can model drivetrain and powertrain systems in an easy, natural way within Matlab and Simulink. The controller of the HEV system is composed of a high level supervisory controller and low level component controllers. We implemented two driving control strategies in the controller. One strategy utilizes power split ratios and shift maps which are created by a user. The other strategy calculates an optimized amount of torque from the engine and battery according to specific driving cycles to follow the optimized results during simulation. This optimized strategy is tested to estimate the dynamic performances and fuel economy of HEV using the simulation program.
