Abstract

As an interim solution, bus way system has been implemented as a part of Jakarta Macro Transportation Scheme. Even though its effect on the traffic conditions is still far from community expectation, the authority is optimistic and working very hard to make the bus way system successful. One of many endeavors is to improve the effectiveness of bus way system by increasing the frequency and introducing high capacity bus such as articulated bus in certain corridors within the system. The easiest way to fulfill the demand for articulated buses in short time is by purchasing them from overseas. However, a more economical alternative way such as manufacturing it domestically using standard bus chassis is worth to be investigated.

This paper discusses a preliminary study in developing articulated bus based on standard bus chassis. A feasible basic configuration of articulated bus was determined through investigation of the existing bus way facility, existing standard bus chassis, domestic bus body manufacturer capability, and road conditions in Jakarta City. Based on the fact that 40% of area of Jakarta is under sea level, while the existing facilities were built for high deck bus, high deck articulated bus seems to be an appropriate solution. The choice of driving wheel configuration, i.e. puller type or pusher type, was studied with regard to available standard bus chassis. Economy of manufacturing and easy of maintenance was the primary factors in selecting the optimum configuration.
