Abstract
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuel tanks, installed on vehicles such as bus operating in Indonesia, have a pressure of 200 bars or more and become a dangerous additional component in the vehicle system. To warrant the standard of safety, the CNG tanks should fulfill the standard of ISO 11439, “High pressure cylinders of natural gas for automotive vehicles”.
This paper studies CNG tanks for buses through the testing of Cylinder Steel CNG type-1 and evaluates the material characteristics of CNG tanks using ISO 11439 standard. The possibilities of CNG tank production, which includes its manufacturing and assembling along with bus chassis, in Indonesia is also discussed.
The study shows that CNG tank (Cylinder Steel CNG type-1) of AISI 4130 steel without joint (seamless-steel) is strong enough in accordance with the international standard ISO 11439, so that it can be used for public transportations such as buses in Indonesia.
