Using FLUENT to Simulate the Air-flow around Body of Coach Manufactured in Vietnam

Abstract

A new model of automobile has to satisfy various criteria in safety, technique, environmental -friendliness, etc and meet consumers’ demands at the maximum level. A key issue in designing and manufacturing process is to carry out a research on the profile of vehicle’s body. It can provide an optimal profile for each new type of vehicle to meet all the above mentioned requirements. Today, economizing on fuel and protecting environment are two most imperative requirements for means of transport, especially automobiles. Reducing aerodynamic drag coefficient (CD) of vehicle is one of the methods which partly meet both requirements. In Vietnam, coaches play a very important role in transporting people among cities and provinces. Along with the development of roads, automobile’s speed is increasingly improved. For all above reasons, more attention should be paid to aerodynamics of coach. In recent years, using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) to simulate the air-flow around bodywork is one of the research methods that gain satisfactory results. Thanks to the rising of microprocessors, CFDs now can deal with complicated issues during the process of analysis and calculating the questions of aerodynamics. Among them, FLUENT can solve many problems related to aerodynamics. Simulation and analysis of the air-flow around objects (coach) help designers observe and determine special positions that need more attention in designing and manufacturing in order to build the optimal profile, reduce aerodynamic drag coefficient CD, noise, and etc, all of which help vehicles, especially coaches satisfy both the prerequisites above.
