Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensors’ Characteristic Converter

Abstract

The automobiles have currently used in Vietnam are diversified and have old ages. There are many generations of automobiles and their spare parts have not been sold or manufactured any more. Operation in tropical climate causes automotive components to be out of order rapidly. The repairs will meet a lot of difficulties because the lack of spare parts, time for importing replaced components. Furthermore, spare parts are much diversified, with a lot of kinds with the equivalent specifications, but until now, we haven’t known their operating performance, especially, these of engine management systems. Starting from the actual needs, the study of the characteristics’ converter of MAP sensor becomes a feasible solution to solve the above-mentioned problems. In this paper, the general theory of automotive airflow swappability is explained in detailed. The schematic circuit of proposed for automotive airflow swappability is designed, and the prototype of this circuit is developed using a single and compact Atmega microcontroller. Various characteristic maps of different types of manifold absolute pressure sensor are stored in memory of the microcontroller thereby, the output signal of a manifold absolute pressure sensor can be equalized to the output signal of other manifold absolute pressure sensors. To demonstrate the possibility of this manifold absolute pressure sensors’ characteristic converter, a commercial vehicle-based experiment was conducted with varying vehicle load at various engine speed. The result shows that the signal of original manifold absolute pressure sensor can be reproduced using the replaced sensor accompanied with the proposed converter. Therefore, the expensive or corrupted manifold absolute pressure sensors can be replaced with cheaper ones.
