Abstract

Although the European standard for Terrestrial Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-T) has been designed primarily for fixed reception, provisions have been made for mobile terminals. Also, a return channel might be implemented by means of some other already available and deployed technology, such as GSM or even UMTS when it becomes available. The experiments that have been conducted so far by consortia and other parties are promising and will soon lead to a new world of options for high speed bi-directional asymmetric transmissions to mobile terminals.

Taking the transmission technology chain for granted, the challenge will then move to the area of interactive services, coordination of different and geographically distinct networks and the capabilities of the reception system. This paper considers some possible scenarios and services for in-car applications and m-commerce. It also describes an efficient system solution based on Philip’s Nexperia family to make those services attractive and effective.
