Abstract
This paper presents an evaluation method of the influence of internal combustion engine structural design in a hybrid powertrain. An engine efficiency map alteration process has been applied to an existing engine consumption map to estimate engine constant power downsizing effects. Different created engine maps have been implemented in a global energy management optimization tool to determine the optimal potential consumption of a conventional and a hybrid vehicle for different driving cycles. Results illustrate a strong influence of downsizing on mild hybrid consumption and a more limited effect in full hybrid applications.
