Abstract

Abstract

High power batteries with significant energy are required for commercial Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) applications. Few battery systems are candidates, and required characteristics are very different depending on the HEV type, from “micro-hybrids” to “plug-in hybrids”. Lead acid solutions are today applied in micro-hybrids, while Nickel/Metal Hydride technology is used in the more demanding hybrids. Li-ion batteries, that already took over the traditional systems in most new portable applications can be the best advanced solution for future HEVs. This presentation describes the performance characteristics of Johnson Controls - Saft lithium-ion technology with regards to power density, rapid charge (re-gen) capability, and cold cranking power. A special attention is given to extended experimentation to demonstrate the excellent calendar life and cycle life, which are the key specific features of this selected – now mature - chemistry. These outstanding properties, without compromising safety, are now applied to the development of complete battery systems for various HEV applications in the frame of the joint venture JCS Advanced Power Solutions recently established between Johnson Controls and Saft. Design improvements are being continuously implemented in several development programs to reach the technical specifications at the required cost level.
