Abstract

In this paper, the experimental work using rapid intake, compression, and expansion machine (RICEM) was carried out to estimate the feasibility of CAI combustion system. The mixing of the burnt and fresh mixtures was realized with the pre-combustion chamber installed in the exhaust port. Flammable mixture in pre-combustion chamber was ignited and fully burnt before it is introduced into combustion chamber and mixed with fresh mixture during the intake period. The amount of IEGR rate was quantified from the pressure traces in the premixed and combustion chambers. The temperature and amount of IEGR was varied from 900 K to 1400 K , and 40% to 55% respectively. The auto-ignition generally occurred when the temperature of IEGR at exhaust valve opening is above 1200K.
