Abstract

Abstract

In this study, the kinetics of the film formation process by zinc dialkyldithiophosphate antiwear additive on rubbing metal surfaces have been investigated using the combination of a mini traction machine (MTM) test rig and the spacer layer imaging technique (SLIM). It has been found that the type of base oil, detergent and especially the type and concentration of dispersant affect the antiwear film formation process. It is seen that both rate of film formation speed at the initial stage and the eventual antiwear film thickness decrease as soot concentration increases.
