Abstract

The authors consider that it is important to promote downsizing using a two-stroke engine in order to further improve vehicle fuel economy. In view of that, the potential improvement in fuel economy of the Pneumatic Direct Injection AR Engine, which the authors have introduced, over the four-stroke engine was analyzed. For verification on an actual vehicle, a prototype 250 cm3 PDI-AR engine was installed on a large scooter which originally had a 385 cm3 four-stroke engine, and fuel economy was tested. The results adequately prove the validity of our presumptions, indicating an approximately 70 % improvement in fuel economy in the ECE40 mode.
