Abstract

The objectives of the present study are to clarify the characteristics of ignition and combustion, the knock limit and the misfire limit of a HCCI engine operated by natural gas (NG) premixed with a small amount of dimethyl ether (DME) as an ignition source, and also to obtain complete reductions in NOx and smoke by using the HCCI engine while achieving a higher thermal efficiency than the one in a conventional diesel engine. The effect of engine compression ratio on the ignition temperatures of low- and high-temperature reactions, the misfire and knock limits and the thermal efficiency of the HCCI engine were mainly investigated.
