Abstract

The benefits of in-cylinder fuel direct-injection system to the exhaust emissions and the fuel economy of twostroke gasoline engines are well-known. In this study, a high-pressure fuel injection technology, Free Armature Injection (FAI), was applied to realize the direct injection concept. A small two-stroke carbureted engine was converted to a FAI prototype engine, and then was calibrated, tested and optimized. The experiment results indicates that the FAI direct injection system can effectively minimize the fuel-air mixture short-circuiting and enable stratified charge combustion at lighter loads, resulting in significant fuel savings and unburned HC emissions reductions.
