Ignition and Combustion Characteristics of Diesel Spray Impinging on a Wall

Abstract

Ignition and combustion characteristics of diesel spray impinging on an inclined wall were experimentally investigated. Ignition point and appearance position of the luminous flame kernel were stereoscopically observed using a two-way fiber optical system. Normal or 30 degrees wall was fixed in a high temperature and high pressure combustion chamber. Effect of injection pressure on ignition point and flame volume was investigated. Ignition points were observed near the spray periphery. The radial position of ignition was shifted to the larger radial location when the injection pressure increased. However a position of first appearance of luminous flame kernel was observed near the impingement point. Further development process of flame became faster and combustion period became shorter with an increase of injection pressure.
