Abstract

The present study conducted a detailed examination of various porous media models for filtration efficiency and pressure drop of diesel particulate filter (DPF). Among numerous different models, the sphere-in-cell and the constricted tube models are investigated. In order for estimating permeability, the properties common in different cordierite DPF were correlated in porous flow model. In addition, the predicted filtration efficiency of the unit collector was compared to experiments. The result shows that by using Kuwabara flow field with correction factor of 0.6, the porosity, pore size and permeability of cordierite DPF can be correlated successfully. The unit collector efficiency predicted by sphere-in-cell model agrees very well with measured data in accumulation mode. But, the constricted tube model does not produce accurate filtration efficiency.
