Abstract

The statistics of head on impacts of buses are analysed, the main categories of frontal collisions are described. One of these accidents is the collision with large rigid wall-like objects. The paper analyses those technical questions, which belong to this kind of accident: safety bumper, protection of the driver (survival space) protection of the passengers through the control of the deceleration, etc. Real frontal impact tests are shown and analysed made with three types of IKARUS buses, having three different impact speed and two impact positions: perpendicular to the concrete wall and under an angle of 45 o . The measured decelerations and the deformations are studied. The role of the safety bumper system are also considered.
