Abstract - Increasing environmental concern is leading to the reduction of permissible regulated vehicle exhaust emissions. A series of emission reduction targets were set and must be met by motor vehicle manufacturers in the near future. Crucial exhaust emission parameters that must be met is the hydrocarbon emission as well as the particulate mass emission. These originate from unburnt fuel and lubricants that enter the combustion chamber either intentionally as fuel or unintentionally from the lubricating oil.

For a better understanding of the process generating pollutants, the emissions of every phase of the combustion cycle have to be monitored online. Moreover, it is important to measure the raw exhaust gas during different driving cycles and investigate the influence of different parameters as for example changing engine operating conditions. The new mass spectrometer (MS) based measurement system LUBRISENSE (Airsense Automotive GmbH) allows the direct detection of unburned gaseous oil HC without the use of costly tracer materials. The gas inlet system enables crank angle resolved monitoring of different raw exhaust gas compounds in the exhaust manifold or directly in the cylinder.

By means of an integration method a complete oil emission map of 72 points of operation is received in one day instead of several weeks with conventional methods. Besides engine mapping and monitoring of oil emission during driving cycles and dynamic engine operation, it is possible to investigate different parameters like:

-Oil consumption mechanisms

-Mechanical engine design

-Cylinder-to-cylinder oil emission

-Lubricant formulation

Rapid online measurement with the system LUBRISENSE will yield further information to understand the process generating oil emission within the combustion chamber. It shall be pointed out, that by applying this new technology many more challenging tasks in measurement of raw exhaust gas or even in tailpipe emissions can be solved.
