Abstract

This paper presents a novel approach to geometric modelling of rotor profiles for high performance superchargers. The proposed approach is based on an original three-dimensional parametric model developed specifically for design optimisation of twin-screw superchargers. This model enables accurate identification and control of the inter-lobe clearance in both transverse and axial cross section of the supercharger rotors and allows quantification of the flow leakage, aiming to improve the overall performance of the supercharger. The parameterisation approach presented is suitable for design automation. It is based on affordable mathematical resources with parametric functions of general use applied to specific geometric configurations of rotors profiles. The model can be used with suitable CAD-CFD interface for visualisation of flow leakage and for rotor profile shape optimisation. The parametric form of the model allows the model integration into commercial CAD software for visualisation and is expected to reduce the design cycle and manufacturing costs related tom current practice riddled with numerous trials, expensive tooling and complex testing.
