Abstract

Rzeppa type c.v. joints are widely used in today’s cars. Their force-transmission balls and the tracks of the driving and driven elements are fitted clearence-free. In order to achieve this fit, precise machining is required for the shapes and sizes of the relevant parts . The parts are much more complicated in structure and shape than those of ball-bearings, making manufacturing technology difficult. With high volume production, more foreign currency is needed to import the whole set of machining equipment. It remains one of the key technologies, blocking the development of national car industries in developing countries.

Professor Wu Derong and the authors of this paper have invented a new, high-performance and low cost jointR-C type joint. Now it has obtained laboratory-stage results. The two main parameters, i.e. the maximum working angle a≥40° and maximum rotating angle difference Df≤0°3¢, have reached the levels of the advance Rzeppa type joint (According to the actual testing result of the samples ).

R-C type joint is based on the double joints, made up of two cross joints. Design Criterion of R-C type joint is to overlap geometrically the two crosses of the double joint into one plane ( thickness=0). The diameter of each cross has certain size ( d>0 ). So interference occurs when the two crosses overlap completely into one plane.

In reality it is quite simple to solve this problem: to make one of the cross an “imagined body” and other a “true body”. When the “imagined cross” and the “true cross” overlap geometrically no interference occurs.
