Abstract

This paper reports the influence of various brake disc materials to brake disc performance such as cast iron, aluminum alloy, magnesium alloy and Duralcan. A full three-dimensional brake disc is created to cope with the effect of rotating and uniform thermal loads. A standard brake test is introduced to create cyclic thermal load between brake and cooling conditions. In analysis, heat loss from the vanes and other parts of brake disc is allowed as well as heat transfer to rubbing surfaces in order to simulate the thermal condition while testing. In addition, Maximum temperatures and temperature gradients including temperature responses are the key to measure efficiencies of brake disc materials. As a result, it reveals that cast iron is not only automotive material for the future of brake disc.
