Abstract

Big strides in road safety have been made since 1970's due to improved vehicle and road design as well as driver training. However driver error still accounts for 90% of road accidents that take place today.

The e-safety initiative expounds on the issue, calling for the rapid application of telematics and active safety technologies to help drivers avoid accidents and receive assistance quickly in case of an accident.

The e-safety initiative is driven by a number of high level targets, for both business and policy makers and calls for an integrated programme of action to realise the targets. Targets include service like emergency call, real time traffic info, advance driver assistance systems like collision warning, evaluation framework for active safety systems and HMI. The action plan will also address the industry's paradox of being subject to an increasing risk of liability as they build safer cars.

Next on the to-do list includes the preparation of concrete initiatives to realise the choosen targets with EC funding. ERTICO and its partners have already forged contacts and discussion is underway.
