Abstract

Current regulations related to buses and coaches safety are mainly focused on the passenger’s protection. However, driver’s safety in not adequately contemplated.

The special risk of the driver’s workplace in many kind of accidents, like frontal collisions, can be higher than the passenger’s one. On the other hand, if the drivers were correctly protected, in such way that they remained conscious and were not seriously injured, they would keep the control of vehicle in manoeuvres after the accidents and would make easy the evacuation.

In this article, the possible accident configurations and their risk of injuries are studied from the point of view or the driver work place, making use of the analysis of national statistics. Main factors of driver’s safety have been analysed, and they have been defined a survival space and some representative tests to improve driver safety.
