Abstract

This paper describes the numerical modeling and simulation method to assess the performance of a gear shifter cable assembly used in a manual transmission. A shifter cable assembly was characterized by various parameters i.e. cable routing, friction force and travel loss which govern the shifter cable packaging and performance. A quantitative assessmentof theseparameters helped to determine the characteristics of a shifter cable assembly and to design the overall shifting system at the early stages of the design. This predictive simulation reduced the design iteration time, and therefore the overall product development cycle time could be minimized. Shifter cable assembly was used to perform the laboratory tests and FE simulation methodwas proposed for the virtual assessment of the above mentioned parameters. A good correlation of test and simulation results showed that the FE simulation model was capable enough to represent the system level physics. The work presented here offers a way of the quantitative assessment of variousshifter cable assemblies and to help the designer in the decision making.
