Abstract

In the current study, a math based approach is proposed for evaluating the emission performance of the Diesel Oxidation converter (DOC) under real driving conditions. A chemical kinetics based 1D GT-Power DOC model is developed and applied on different exhaust after-treatment configurations. Based on the results, best possible design of DOC that meets engineering limits of Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Total Hydrocarbon (THC) emissions was selected for a mid-sized SUV. Also for the selected architecture, analysis results helped to optimize the design parameters like converter volume, CPSI and PGM loading. The modeling results shows that a close-coupled converter performs better than a close coupled with under floor converter combination due to the proximity to relatively high temperature engine exhaust. The results also showed that increasing converter volume beyond a certain level is counterproductive and the benefits of high PGM loading is more pronounced with close-coupled converters.
