Abstract

The amazing advances in electronics, communication and software technologies create big expectations on new systems able to increase significantly in-vehicle safety. Once the ACC systems are already on the market, there should be a logical evolution of these comfort systems towards new advanced safety strategies in order to decrease the accident risk. In this sense, the White Paper on European Transport policy published by the European Commission in September 2001 has set out an ambitious objective in order to improve the safety level of our transport system up to 2010.

This paper gives a general overview on the new ADAS functions, analyzing the impact of such systems on traffic and society. Also a possible roadmap for the introduction of ADAS technologies is presented. Challenges and requi-rements regarding sensor technologies, human machine interface issues and in-vehicle architecture aspects are extensively described. Some experiences based on the work carried out implementing and testing ADAS technologies on special advanced prototypes, as the "Advanced ACC Toledo", are also presented.

Finally, next steps and final conclusions are outlined. The paper is closed by an outlook of the key items.
