Abstract

ABSTRACT:

The paper presents the dynamic model of a hybrid (thermal/electric) automotive powertrain. The simulated vehicle is a middle class automobile, with front wheels drive and three-speed automatic transmission. The overall goal is to determine whether the existing, conventional, propulsion system might be, in theory, made more efficient and dynamic, if an electric drive system would be added. A dynamic model of the hybrid electric powertrain comprises a static engine map model, a very simple, two-state electric motor component, and a more elaborated transmission model, as well as a basic model of rubber tire. Although kept simple (in order to be suited for propulsion system controller development), the proposed model allows an acceptable drive-away simulation, for both cases - conventional and hybrid operation, while taking into account the important dynamics (gear shifting, some oscillations at stand-still acceleration and shifts).
