ABSTRACT:

Compression ratio is a construction parameter with highest influence on fuel economy and fuel characteristics. By application of variable mechanisms the optimal regimes field are extended to the prime requirement: consumption, power, emission, noise etc and/or extended the possibility to work the engine with different fuels.

The new concept of the IC engine based on VCR (Variable Compression Ratio) -unit which has the possibility and versatility to work as an Otto as a Diesel engine, and above all, as an environmental friendly engine. A flexible cycle engine combines the best characteristics of both Otto and Diesel engines.

At idle and partial load the compression ratio is progressively increases and engine work as a Diesel with diesel fuels, or one ecological fuel with cetane additive. On higher load the automatic variable compression ratio VCR-engine works as an efficient Otto or Spark Ignition with gasoline or gaseous fuels (LPG, CNG) or one ecological fuel with octane additive.

In this paper is given a survey of internal combustion engines of new concepts development and framework directions for contribution to improvement of its economic and ecological characteristics. The ideal version ought to posses variable basic characteristics. We believed that new concept of the IC engine with flexible Otto or Diesel cycles and variable compression ratio can be best power units for future vehicles, for all fuels.
