The FISITA Intelligent Safety Conference China will take place at China SAE’s SAECCE event in Shanghai on 29 October 2020. Alexandre Català Garcia, Business Unit Director, Applus IDIADA. He will be speaking at the event about How to improve user acceptance of automated driving: an approach based on leading edge driving simulator. We asked him a few questions prior to the event:

What are you planning on talking about at the Intelligent Safety Conference and what types of people do you think will benefit most from what you have to say?
We will focus on user acceptance for automated driving and on how we can evaluate this functionality in the early stages of development using CAE and advanced driving simulators. This is useful for all parties involved in the development and validation of automated driving functions such as SW developers, human factors experts and vehicle dynamics engineers.

Safety is at the heart of mobility development and “intelligent safety” has been delivering real solutions into vehicles for many years, how do you see this increase in adoption of intelligent safety continuing as ADAS develops into fully autonomous functionality?
Safety will be a critical aspect for the development of ADAS functions in the next years, especially for those situations where the control of the vehicle is either shared or can be handed over from the driver to the vehicle and vice versa. The transition into full autonomous systems will still take time and vehicle-machine interaction will be a key point to ensure safety.

Do you predict a sudden jump in technology, consumer expectations changing, OEM development accelerating, new solutions disrupting the market, or any particular government legislation or standards prompting a big switch any time in the near future? 
We may see an acceleration driven by consumer expectations and the consequent increase in terms of investment. However, the technology will move at a gradual pace, without big jumps. The safety aspects are too critical, and they require stricter validation processes for reliable performance.

What attracts you personally to this area and are there any particular advances or changes in intelligent safety that you hope to see happening sooner rather than later?
I have been dealing with active vehicle safety and driver feeling for many years in my career. I am excited to see how we can increase the level of automation while keeping high standards for safety and user experience, although I have to admit that if this comes at the price of cutting driving pleasure, it will be interesting to see how different carmakers deal with market demand.
